The tide had taken the old boat shed in the spring, so Maud Tallack rowed her wedding linen across the bay in a dinghy with one oar mended in string. Her intended, Joss Penhale, waited on the slipway with his hat in his hands and a face like a man who had counted the gulls twice to be sure.

The priest was a Methodist from Newlyn who had come on the ferry and would not stay past noon. He wanted the ring first, then the vows, then a prayer for the fishing. Maud had sewn a ribbon through the sleeve of her dress, dark blue like the channel at dusk, and when she took her grandmother's silver band from her thumb she found a seahorse scratched inside it, curled tight as a fist. Her grandmother had told her it was for keeping two things in one place: the sea that carries and the land that holds.
They were married among the cow parsley with the heart-shaped rock behind them, the one the children climbed to look for crabs. Joss slid the ring on and it fitted, which surprised them both. Then a seahorse drifted up out of the shallows, impossibly, its tail wrapped around a wildflower stem, and it hung there in the clear water between their feet as though it had come to witness the vows and was in no hurry to leave.
Maud laughed until the priest coughed. Joss said he had seen worse omens in a pilchard shoal. They walked home by the dotted path along the cliff, leaving the ferry to its noon crossing, and the seahorse did not follow them, but when Maud looked back from the gate there was a small silver curl of light still turning in the water where the rock met the sea.
