Every spring the rooms at Gull Rest filled with lodgers who wanted sea air and no questions, and every spring the landlady, Hester Quill, climbed the ladder to the attic to look at the drawing pinned above the trunk. It showed a stem curling in from a corner, three open blossoms, two buds still shut tight, and leaves turned over as if the wind had caught them. Her mother had drawn it in pencil, gone over it in ink, and shaded the petals so the light fell the same way it fell through the front window.

The lodger in number four was a clockmaker from Bideford who said the house was damp. One night he tore the sheet from the wall in a temper and carried it down to the kitchen to burn. Hester found him standing at the range with the paper curling toward the flame. She said nothing, only took the drawing from him and smoothed it flat on the table, then showed him the thin stem at the bottom that ran off the edge of the page and under the skirting, where her mother had never drawn a leaf.
In the morning the clockmaker found green shoots pushing through the cracks in the skirting of number four, pale and fine as pen strokes, and the buds had opened overnight into small white flowers. He sent word to Bideford that he would stay the summer after all. Hester kept the drawing where it had always been, and she never again let anyone bring a match near it. The house still smells of wet leaves in June, and the lodgers still wake to find the window frame green.
