Traditional rose and gripped stem flash

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A coloured drawing on pale paper shows a cluster of three open red roses and a closed bud, with dark brown-green leaves and a thorny stem. A grey hand at the lower left grips the stem, with red blood drops falling from the fingers and thorns. Bold black outlines and smooth red and brown shading give it a solid, flat finish, with faint outlines of other designs at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You find the rose at the foot of the north wall, where the frost lingers longest, and it is the only one in the Ashworth garden still open in November. Mrs Pell always mentioned her roses first at the lychgate, and they were the last thing she asked about when the ambulance came for her. Her gardening gloves still hang on the hook by the shed door, too small for your hands, so you go bare-handed and reach for the stem.

The thorns find you before the secateurs do. Three beads of blood open on your fingers and drop onto the frost-white path, bright as the petals. You ought to let go. Instead you grip harder, because Mrs Pell once told you that a rose which draws blood has decided it wants to be picked, and you want to know whether she was joking.

You start to cut, and the stem holds. Not the wood, which is tough enough, but something beneath it, a slow pulling back into the earth like a held breath. You remember the rule she pinned above the sink on the back of a seed packet: ask the bush first, then take only what it offers. So you sit back on your heels, open your hand, and wait with blood going cold on your wrist.

When you look again the bud beside the open rose has swelled and loosened, and a single dark drop has settled on the step. You take the rose, leave the bud where it is, and carry it to the gate with the gloves still hanging behind you. Frost is lifting off the lawn in slow white threads, and somewhere behind you the bud is opening one petal at a time for whoever comes next.
