The pigeons on the roof of Gorse House had been there longer than the lift, and Marcus Oduya had decided years ago that they were the only residents who understood the building. Every morning he climbed the eleven flights with a bag of day-old bread from the Lidl on Carrow Road, because his nan had always fed birds and because nobody else on the estate would. Today the wind came off the estuary sharp enough to sting his ears, and a grey feather was caught in the wire mesh by the stairwell door, turning over and over like it was looking for a way out.

He unhooked it with two fingers. It was a flight feather, long and soft at the root, and he held it up against the sky over the car park where a supermarket trolley lay on its side. Below him Mrs Acheampong was shouting at her son about a bike chained to the railings, and the sound rose and then broke apart in the wind. He thought about the letter from the housing office in his coat pocket, the one that said the flat would be reviewed, and he folded it smaller without looking at it.

When he shook the crumbs from the bag, the flock came down in a rush, a dozen of them, and then all at once they lifted again, peeling off the parapet and wheeling away over the rooftops towards the marsh. Marcus watched them climb until they were specks, then tucked the feather behind his ear and went down the stairs two at a time, taking the dead ones at the bottom as the lift doors gaped open on nothing.
