A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The words were still there on the attic wall when I went up with the bucket, pressed in black ink above the wash basin, in capitals that leaned a little to the left as if they wanted to be somewhere else. Mrs Pryce had said to paint over them before the Whitsun couples came. I said the wall needed two coats of distemper anyway. She said the damp would only bleed through, and that was the end of it. So I stood on the stool with a cloth and a cup of vinegar and did not scrub yet.

Somebody had taken great trouble over that wreath. The little flowers ran round the left side and over the top like a hedge that had got into the wrong garden, and the scallops on the right looked like the lace edging Mrs Pryce ironed onto every tea towel in the house. Between them were rows of dots, and tiny hearts tucked in at the bottom where the ink had pooled. Nothing was shaded. Every line had been gone over with the same steady hand, as though the drawing had been done to keep someone's nerves level rather than to be looked at.

Tomas had drawn it the winter he came to us, when the sea wind rattled the sash all night. He left on the morning ferry to Harwich with a canvas bag and no forwarding address, and the room was stripped and aired and waiting for the next person before I thought to look at the wall again. I went up to the attic with the cloth in my hand and read the words twice, and the cloth stayed dry.

I did not paint it over. I rinsed the basin, opened the window onto the grey water, and left the wreath as it was, flowers and all, for whoever came up next to decide what to do with it.
