Flock of birds on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A flock of small black birds in flight travels diagonally up the forearm, with the largest birds nearest the elbow and the smallest toward the wrist. The birds are drawn as simple solid silhouettes with fine detail, and the ink is black only. The arm is held out against a soft, pale blue sea, with a hand and part of a second mark visible at the right edge.

Dear Tom,

The starlings came over the pit heap on Tuesday, forty or so, and they went down the valley the way the men used to go down the shaft, the biggest first and the little ones trailing after. Mam stood on the back step with a wet sheet over her arm and said they were making for the sea. I told her starlings don't know where the sea is. She said they know more than we do.
The ballot notice for the Rosie Pit went up outside the Working Men's Club on Monday, and Dai Pritchard read it out loud to nobody. Forty-one names. Yours isn't on it, so you can stop worrying that the letter will say what you're afraid it says. Mr Evans has put a chain on the lamp-room door and says he'll take it off when the last boat is gone, which I think is his way of saying he's sorry.
I've moved your things out of the back bedroom. The blue jumper is folded in the drawer with the cedar block, and the photograph of the coast at Tenby is on the mantel where you can't see it from the bed. I didn't put it away because I'm angry. I put it where the light comes through the net curtains in the afternoon and makes the sea look like it has more air in it.
Glenys says the smallest birds always fall behind and it's nothing to fret about. I've decided that means you'll be the one who comes back through the gap in the fence first. Keep the window on the latch, not because I expect you, only because the birds know the way in when the weather turns.
Your loving sister, Nell
