Black abstract back tattoo with spine motifs
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless man's back is covered by large black abstract tattoo shapes, with sweeping curved forms spreading over the shoulders and a central vertical band running down the spine. Small circular and square motifs sit along the centre, including one shape that resembles an eye. The ink is solid black with no greys, set against warm skin tones in a close, slightly angled view of the back.

The swell came under the galley door at four bells and slid the barley pot clean across the range before either of us could grab it. Mrs Pryce didn't look up. She reached for the ladle, scooped the grey mess back into the pan, and started counting the brass rounds on the bulkhead the way other women count rosary beads.

"Eleven," she said. "Twelve's the square one, that's the hatch. Thirteen's the one that looks at you." I asked her which one looked at me. She tapped the pale brass disc above the stove, the one with a dull lid in its middle, and said it had been there since the Maud was launched at Grimsby and had never once blinked. I thought she was pulling my leg until the next roll threw me against the copper and the lid rattled in its seat like something waking.
We worked through the night with the black water sloshing knee-high across the deck, lapping at the fixed step in long curling lines that I kept wanting to wipe away. By morning the wind had dropped and the grey light came through the portholes in neat squares across the floor. Mrs Pryce sat on an upturned crate and drank her tea with both hands.
"You did well," she said. "Keep the ladle and keep the count. Whatever comes up through the drains, you tell it the number and it goes back down." I laughed. She didn't. Then she nodded at the bulkhead, and I swear the lid was shut tight the way she had left it, but a single drop of water sat in the middle of it, waiting for someone to take it away.
