The big top came down in Market Harborough on Tuesday, and the last of the ring boys hauled the poles onto a flatbed that smelled of diesel and wet sawdust. I stayed behind to sign the paper for the animals, which was easy, because there were no animals left to sign for, only the old grey mare that Mr Corrigan keeps out of kindness. The bills still say Corrigan's Grand Pavilion. Nobody reads them now.

You asked in your last letter whether I ever found the feather. It was at the bottom of the wardrobe trunk, pressed between two sheets of tissue, a long grey and white quill from the macaw that bit Mr Corrigan's thumb in 1971. Someone had written beside it in pencil, in that tidy hand of his: For the girl who will go further than we did. I had forgotten the line entirely. I sat on the trunk for an hour with the lamp off.

Enclosed is the heart. You'll remember it, the tin one with the cracked hinge, which the strongman's wife wore when she swung on the rings. Inside is a photograph of a boy I never met, and a slip of paper that says only Tuesday, keep going. I think it was meant for me, though I am not sure who left it. Keep it somewhere dry.

Write back soon, and tell me whether the sea is still grey at Whitby. I'll be at your aunt's in Lincoln until the end of the month, sleeping in a bed that does not sway.
