Swallow, dagger and rose on an arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A swallow in flight sits above a dagger laid across a circular rope frame, with a sea and sunset scene behind it. A shaded rose with leaves sits below the central motif. Bold outlines and smooth grey shading give the piece depth, and the design is centred on the skin with the rose anchoring the base.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Mary Trevenna kept a dagger on the mantel, its handle wound in tarred rope, the blade gone dull from being taken down and put back. Her husband Tom had carried it home from a Lisbon wharf the year they married. Every spring a pair of swallows nested in the lee of the boathouse, and she told the children that a swallow which came home meant a man was coming home too.

The Rosa went out in March and did not come back. The swallows returned in April regardless, and Mary left the boathouse door propped open so they could work their mud into the rafters. Each morning she hung a rope ring on the nail by the window, laid the dagger across it as Tom used to when he planned a course, and watched the bay through the gap in the shutters.

In May the harbour clerk's boy came running up the cobbles shouting that a boat was in the bay with a broken mast. It was not the Rosa. It was a stranger from Falmouth with a wicker cage on his knee. Tom had given it to him at Lisbon, he said, and asked him to carry it home to the woman with the rose on her sill. Inside sat a swallow with a red thread tied round one leg, too weak to fly.

Mary carried the cage to the step and opened the little door. The bird sat a long while, then rose over the roofs and turned out toward the sunset sea. She watched until it was a speck against the orange water, then went in, took the dagger down from its ring, and set it back on the mantel where it had always been. The swallows nested again that summer, and she left the door open for them.
