Three birds in flight on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three birds, with the largest near the top of the limb and two smaller birds below it, drawn with feathered wings and detailed heads. The work combines fine, sketchy outlines with stippled and hatched shading to suggest plumage and depth. The image is shown in black and grey against a pale background, with the birds filling the length of the limb.

The boat from Skerrow Bay went out on the ninth morning of the fog, and by noon nobody could say which way the shore lay. Mairi Lennox kept her hands on the tiller and listened for the bell on the Carrick buoy, but the bell had been silent since March.

Her husband Tam had taught her the old rule. When the fog thickened, you watched the birds. Gulls went home to the land and terns went out to the fishing grounds, but the three swifts that nested under the harbour wall flew in a line, the eldest high and the two young ones low over the water. Wherever they flew, there was sea enough to float a boat. She had never seen swifts this far out, yet she watched them and followed.

For an hour the birds led her through grey water. The lowest one brushed the wave tops and dipped a wingtip to show her the way past the rocks. Once it dropped so close she could see the speckled feathers on its breast. Then the fog tore open like wet paper, and there was the harbour wall, the bell tower and Tam standing on the quay with his collar turned up, having walked the length of it since dawn.

He asked who had brought her in. She said three birds. He nodded and said nothing, because every fisher on that coast knew the swifts were the sons the sea had taken first, and that they flew home whenever a boat was lost nearby. Mairi watched them settle on the wall. The smallest looked back at the water once before it tucked its head under its wing.
