Black and grey birds on a forearm and hand
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three black and grey birds in flight are tattooed along the forearm, with a fourth on the back of the hand. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine feather texture and tonal gradients. A realistic hummingbird with a blue-grey tint appears to hover just above the open palm, and it does not seem to sit on the skin. The pale, plain background keeps the focus on the arm and hand.

The swifts had gone from the bell tower by the feast of Saint Giles, and Prior Osric wanted them back in the margins of the herbal before the ink on the new quires dried. I had drawn them for him three times already. Each time he said the wings were too stiff, as though a bird could be taught to hold still for a man with a pen.

The hummingbird came in a crate of Venetian silk, wedged between two bales, and the carter swore he had found it dead. It was not dead. It hung in the straw with its throat working, too small to be frightened of me. I warmed honey in water, dipped the end of a goose quill, and held my hand flat beneath its beak. For most of a night nothing happened. Then the bird came down onto my palm the way a drop of rain settles on a leaf, weightless, and drank.
By the third morning it was stronger, flicking from the cloister arches to the rim of the lavarium fountain and back again. Osric came to see it with the abbot's steward at his elbow. He said it would make a fine marvel for the visiting bishop, and that a bird which feeds from a brother's hand belongs to the house. I said nothing. I had only ever wanted to draw what would not stay still.
I opened the cloister door at Compline, when the bell had stopped and the cold light lay blue on the flagstones. The bird did not go at once. It hovered at the height of my face, its wings a blur no pen could catch, and then it was over the wall and gone. The next morning I drew it from memory in the margin of the herbal, and for once the wings were perfectly still.
