Three orcas on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three orcas are shown as solid black silhouettes, each swimming in a loop so they form a rough circle. The shapes have simple, smooth edges with no visible shading or internal detail. The design is in black ink only, placed on the wrist of a hand raised against a plain white background.

Sit closer, the lamp will drown us all in the dark if you don't. Ferris Mackie's boat went out past the Skerry light on a February Tuesday, and the sea rose under it like a lid lifting off a pot. By dusk the harbourmaster had given him up, and the widows at the top of Crane Street had started setting out black cups.

The whales came in from the north that night, the old women swore it, black as wet slate. They did not go round the harbour mouth like sensible creatures. Three of them swam in one long loop beyond the breakwater, each following the one before, round and round in the same ring, never once all breathing at the same moment.
The harbourmaster's men rowed out with hurricane lamps and found Mackie's boat wedged between two rocks, its hull stove but its rudder tied to the gunwale with rope he had no memory of tying. The circling whales kept the cold water pushing away from the rocks until the tide turned and the boat slid clear. Nobody could say which of the three had led. Mackie said afterwards that none of them ever had to.
So if you walk the quay tonight and see a lamp burning at the end of the pier, don't ask who lights it. The water inside the breakwater still turns in a ring on still nights, and the gulls will not land on it.
