Owl and fox tattoos on wrists
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small tattoos sit on the wrists of two pale forearms, with an owl on the left and a fox on the right. Both animals are drawn in fine detail with soft grey shading that gives them dimension and fur texture. The plain light grey background keeps the focus on the ink and the gently posed hands.

Late August, and the Pemberton orchard has gone heavy with windfalls. You walk the rows before light with a basket on your hip, the grass silver with dew, and somewhere above the Bramley trees an owl stops calling the moment your boots touch the gravel. It has done this all summer, as if you were a rumour it did not trust.

The fox arrives on the third morning, rust-coloured in the grey light, sitting at the end of row seven as though it has been there all night. It does not run. It watches your basket the way a clerk watches a queue. You set a plum on the low wall between you, and the fox takes it without hurry, and the owl drops from the gatepost to see what sort of arrangement this is.
By the first week of September you have a treaty of sorts. The fox keeps the ground fruit clear of wasps, the owl keeps the high boughs free of starlings, and you keep the wall stocked with the split ones the pickers leave behind. Nobody signed anything. Mr Pemberton, who notices everything except what matters, says the orchard has never been so quiet.
On the last evening of summer you come back for the ladder and find a single plum on the gatepost, bitten clean in two. One half is gone. The other sits in the last of the light, untouched, waiting for whichever of them comes back first to take it.
