Small bird on inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small solid black bird in profile sits on the inner wrist, with a few scattered specks of ink beside it. The bird is a simple silhouette with some dotted texture, and the tattoo is very small relative to the hand. The photograph is black and white, with soft light and a pale patterned backdrop that keeps the focus on the wrist.

The sparrow came to the well every morning before the women arrived, and every morning it took one crumb of barley cake from the ledge and flew off over the reed beds towards the hills. Nobody in Aru Kessa thought much of it. Birds were cheap there, and the village had plenty else to fret over, like the salt tax and the widow Mehri's goats getting into the millet.

Then came the spring the river dropped to a trickle, and Tosh, the potter's youngest, began to watch the bird more closely because he had nothing else to do. He saw it land on a grey stone at the edge of the dry channel and leave a speck of black ash there. He followed the specks for three days, past the place where the earth cracked like fired clay, until he came to a cave where an old man kept a lamp burning without oil.

"Every kindness given to a bird is weighed," the old man said, without looking up from his bowl. "The sparrow carries the weights to the hills, where the gods keep their scales. Your mother gave her last bread to a stranger in the cold year. That bread is still sitting in the wrong pan, and until it tips, the river stays low."

Tosh walked home with empty hands and no answers. At the well the next morning he crumbled his own barley cake onto the ledge and waited, knees wet, until the sparrow dropped down and took the largest piece. It turned its head to look at him before it rose over the reeds, and far beyond the hills, something small and heavy shifted to the other side.
