Black and grey blossom thigh tattoo

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Several large open flowers with stamens and leaves run along the outer thigh, with a branch trailing down towards the knee. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading and fine dark outlines, giving them a delicate, three-dimensional look. The composition follows the curve of the leg, and the plain grey and purple background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire's warm enough for everyone. You'll want to hear about Ada Mere and the wild cherry at the wood's edge, because my grandmother swore it was true and she never once told a lie before supper.

Past the last stile at Cold Harrow stood a cherry older than the church. Nobody picked from it. In March its flowers came out grey-white on the bare twigs, big as a child's palm, with dark threads in the centre like the stitching on a widow's glove. Ada's father was a charcoal burner, and he said the tree was keeping the wood's count of the living, and that you must never take a bloom without asking.

Tobias Vane, who had money from the mill and no patience, came up one wet morning with a knife and no question. He cut a branch as long as his arm. By dusk the blossoms had gone the colour of ash on his cart, and by the next night his horse would not go past the stile. Ada walked out in her father's boots, knelt in the wet, and asked the tree what it wanted. The answer came the way they always do, in the smell of crushed leaves and the sound of a branch settling.

She took Tobias back to the tree and made him lay the branch across the roots. He set the flowers down one at a time, and with each one a shadow lifted off his shoulders, grey as smoke on a window, until he was only a man in wet clothes. The tree kept its stamens. It kept its count. And when spring came round again, the blossoms opened in the old pale way, with shading under every petal, as if someone had gone over them softly with a damp thumb.

So if you go past the stile and see a bloom, say thank you. That's all the tree ever asked.
