Black and grey realistic cherry blossom tattoo with branches and leaves covering the outer thigh of a kneeling person.

Cherry blossom thigh tattoo in grey

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows several cherry blossom flowers, buds and slender branches wrapping across the outer thigh and upper leg. The petals are shaded in soft greys with fine, dark stamens and leaves, giving the flowers a realistic, dimensional look. The composition runs diagonally down the leg against a pale skin tone and a purple shag rug.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Hollin Bank planted the cherry on purpose. It came up out of the cinder bank behind the chapel, a stick of a thing with one green shoot, and Mary Pargeter, who kept the bakehouse, said it was the only tree in the parish that had ever grown without being asked. The men cut it back twice for the pit props. It came again.

When the spring came round the tree flowered, and the blossom was grey. The coal dust sat on every petal, so the whole bank looked like a cloud that had come down to rest on the slag. Children were told not to pick it, though nobody said why. Mary said the flowers were only doing what the miners did, going out pale in the morning and coming back dark at night, and that they had the sense to wear it well.

The year Tom Whitelock did not come up from the number two shaft, his mother walked out to the bank before the lamp men had finished their talking. She broke off a branch no longer than her forearm, buds still tight and green at the tips, and carried it home under her shawl without a word to anyone. She set it in a jug on the back kitchen sill and sat with it through the night.

By the Sunday the buds had opened indoors, five of them, white as the dish towels, and a grey dust had settled on the sill beneath. Mary came round with a loaf and found the old woman asleep in the chair with a petal in her palm. She did not wake her. The pit whistle went at six, and the blossom went on opening.
