A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had come over the pass in the night, and by morning the road to Hallow Gate was gone under white. Old Maud Tennant kept the inn there with her nephew Edwin, who was nine and could not be trusted with the bread knife. Three travellers came in out of the drift before noon, a carter, a priest, and a woman with a pale rose painted in pink and grey on the stair-side of her thigh, which showed when she sat by the hearth and hitched her skirt to warm her shins.

Maud did not ask about it. She put a bowl of barley broth in front of the woman and said the rose would be cold if she kept it out of the fire. The woman laughed and said it was never cold, it only looked that way. Edwin stared until Maud sent him to fetch turf from the shed. When he came back the woman had laced a white fishnet stocking up over the flower, lace top folded down, and was knitting her toes with wool from her bag as if the inn were her own.

That night the wind dropped and the stars came out hard over the white fields. Maud found the priest awake, reading the kitchen almanac by a candle, and he told her the woman had walked from the lowland fairs with nothing but a tin of pins and a name she would not give. Maud said the rose on her leg had been drawn by a man who kept bees, which was a thing she had heard at a wedding years ago and never forgotten.

In the morning the road was open again, and the woman had gone before any of them woke. On the hearth lay one white stocking, still warm, folded neatly as a letter. Edwin kept it in the press for a year and never once wore it, though he swore he saw a flower on the tallow box, pink where the wax was thin.
