Black and grey clouds and ship sleeve on an arm
Japanese · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full sleeve tattoo runs from the upper arm down to the forearm, with a sailing ship set among rolling clouds and peony flowers. The linework is bold and the clouds are built up with soft grey shading and smooth blends. The arm is held up against bare timber panelling, and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

The ship on Dorrie's arm was the one thing her father never let anyone paint over, and when the lighthouse keeper's boy asked why it sailed through clouds instead of water, she told him the sea was a rumour told by people who had never got above the weather. The peonies had come later, after the bad winter at Hallam Quay, when the barge company went under and the sailmakers scattered to every town with a loom. Her mother had grown them in a tin bath on the towpath, pink ones that shouldn't survive the damp, and they survived anyway.

The boy wanted to know if the ship was lost. Dorrie said it was only waiting for the grey to lift, the way cargo waits in a warehouse until somebody with a proper ledger comes asking. She pulled her sleeve up to show him the bird that circled the shoulder, a heron or a gull depending on the light, and told him that herons knew the river better than any captain, because they stood in it all day and never once drowned.
When the barge finally slid out past the sluice that spring, nobody on the bank cheered. The water was brown and the sky above it was enormous, folded like wet linen, and the ship painted on Dorrie's skin seemed to lean forward into it. She held the tiller with the arm that bore the clouds, and the peonies, out in the cold air, went on blooming.
