Black and grey clouds tattoo on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a torso and upper thigh in black sports underwear and a black bra, with the face out of frame. A large black and grey tattoo covers the outer thigh, showing clouds and a shaded animal form. A small fine line tattoo sits at the side of the waist, and the photo has soft indoor lighting against a pale wall.

Ruth had counted the ewes twice before the cloud came down off the tops, and it was the third count that worried her, because the number was wrong by one and nobody else had noticed. Her father was in bed with his chest. The bottom field still held the ewes that had not been sold at Michaelmas, and the north gate had been found open that morning with the latch lifted, not broken.

The grey beast came down with the cloud. She saw it first as a darkness in the whiteness above the wall, then as a shoulder, then as a long head with the ruff standing up like smoke. It did not hurry. It stood by the gate and looked at her the way the old tenant used to look at a bad bargain, patient and unimpressed. Her grandmother had said the clouds on the tops were the wolf's breath, and that if you fed it what it was owed in February, it would take its share and go back up without touching the flock.
Ruth had nothing to feed it but the heel of yesterday's loaf and a cup of skimmed milk. She set them on the wall stone by stone. The wolf ate the bread, lapped the milk, then looked past her at the byre where the lame ewe had been kept apart. Ruth understood it was asking for nothing more than her attention. She opened the byre door and let the ewe out, and the two of them walked together to the gate.
By morning the cloud had lifted. The frost in the bottom field held a long track of prints leading up towards the tops, and beside the gate, pressed deep into the rime, a single set of hoofprints had walked the other way, sound on all four feet.
