A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Marian, the mist was still lying low on the saltings when I unfolded the first net at ten to five, and I thought of Dad saying a fog-bound morning was worth two ordinary ones. It went into the bag with its legs folded and its dignity intact. When I worked the ring on, a long grey plume came away in my fingers, soft and banded like pencil shading run over with a thumb. I didn't have the heart to throw it back in the reeds, so it's pinned in my notebook now, beside the little slate heart you posted me at Christmas. The two of them look ridiculous together, a feather and a stone, but I like the company.

When I got back to the hut I checked the ring number against the old ledger, the one Dad kept in pencil. It matched a bird he'd ringed the spring before you were born. Thirty-eight years. The clerk in Thetford said that was impossible, so I've written to him with the dates and told him to check his sums.

Sunrise came up pink over the sea wall while I was packing up, and I let the heron go from the edge of the dyke. It didn't hurry. It lifted off slow and grey, and for a moment the light caught the feathers so they looked painted on the air. Come up at half four next time. You'll see it.
