Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A mirror selfie of a torso in a black triangle bikini, with the head cropped out of frame. Two small tattoos are visible: one on the upper arm towards the right of the image and one at the side of the ribcage near the bikini strap, both with thin, delicate black linework. The image is cropped tightly with a light, neutral background and a wardrobe edge visible at the lower right.

Brother Osric had copied the psalter for eleven winters before anyone noticed the marks in its margins. They were no bigger than a flea's footprint, a single stroke here and a small hook there, and he made them with the finest nib the scriptorium owned. Prior Aldred found them on a Tuesday, holding a leaf up to the window where the frost was thinning.

"What are these?" he asked.
Osric said they were nothing, only a habit, the way some men hum over their work. The prior did not believe him. He had been a copyist once, and he knew the kind of man who counts things.
That night the prior sat alone with the book and a candle stub, and he read the marks the way Osric must have read them all along. Each one was a day. Some days had a second mark beside them, and those were the days the bell in the tower had cracked, the year the river came over the cloister wall, the morning the eels were carried out of the fen in baskets. Beside the last mark, in the same small hand, were three names he had not heard spoken in years.
In the morning he carried the psalter to the cold chapel, where Osric was kneeling before matins. The prior opened it on the lectern and waited. After a while Osric got up, took the nib from its case, and dipped it. The prior watched him make one more mark, no larger than the others, and neither of them said what day it stood for.
