Black and grey figure in a long robe on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A tall standing figure in a long dark robe is shown with its head bowed and a curved, horn-like form arching over it. The shading moves from deep black in the robe to soft grey highlights on the figure and the curve above. The design fills the length of the lower leg against a plain grey background.

Mother brushes the frost from her shoulders each morning, the way she always did, and the horn above her head has gathered so much rime that from the valley it looks like a second moon hung over the rock.

Mother says the stone was pale when the first masons cut her, though nobody living has seen it that colour. Wind and woodsmoke have darkened her to the shade of wet slate, and where the light falls grey across her hood she seems to be listening for something under the ice. Father used to say she was bowing to the mountain and the mountain was bowing back. I thought that was only the sort of thing a father says to a boy who asks too many questions.
Last night the horn sang. I know how that sounds. It was the wind pushing through the split at its tip, a low note like a ewe calling her lamb, and the goats got up in the pen. I took the lantern out and counted the coins people have left at her feet over the years. There were forty-one, and one of them was the Lowland penny you swore you had thrown into the river. I have not decided whether to be angry or glad, so I have put it back where it was and left you to work out which.
