Geometric cat on a lower leg
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A sitting cat is drawn in angular, faceted outlines, with its tail curving down the leg. Interior panels are filled with parallel black hatching and solid black areas, giving a folded, origami-like effect. The cat is centred on a pale calf against a dark background, and the ink is black with no colour.

The cat had been sitting on the end bench at Hollin Cross for eleven weeks before you thought to fold it a paper one, and by then the signal box had stopped answering and the 16:42 to Leeds was an hour late with no one saying why. You took a sheet from the lost property ledger, the blank backs of old tickets being the only paper that never seemed to matter to anyone, and you pressed the creases with your thumbnail the way your mother taught you, valley folds first, then the mountain lines that turn a square into something with edges.

The cat that came out was all planes. Two triangles for ears, a rhombus for its shoulder, a long stepped wedge for the back that folded over itself where the sun would have gone. It looked nothing like the grey tabby on the bench, which was soft and loose and kept its eyes on the rails, but when you set the paper on the slats beside it, the tabby stretched, looked at the paper, and then looked at you as if you had made a reasonable point.
Carl from the ticket office came out at half five with his flask and said the cat had no owner, that the station had been feeding it since the cafe closed, and that you shouldn't leave paper rubbish on the platform. You agreed. You left the paper cat on the bench anyway.
In the morning the bench was empty except for the paper, folded flat now, a single crease running across its middle where something heavy had sat on it. The tabby was on the platform edge below, tail curled round its feet, watching the empty track for a train that had already gone.
