Blindfolded winged woman on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic tattoo of a woman with long flowing hair, wearing a blindfold across her eyes, with a single tear on her cheek. Large feathered wings frame her on both sides, and a small kneeling figure sits on a striped wooden floor at the base of the design. The work is rendered in smooth black and grey shading with soft gradients and fine hair detail, set against a plain grey background.

The snow had been down three days when the farmer's wife at Scarrow Hill heard knocking at the barn, though the barn had lost its door to the wind in November. She went out with the lantern anyway. Standing in the drift was a woman with a strip of cloth bound over her eyes and a pair of grey wings folded at her back, each feather furred with frost.

'You're looking for the boy,' the wife said, because there was only one thing anyone came to Scarrow for in winter. The woman shook her head. She said she had been sent to count the living in the parish, but she could not see to count them, so she had come to ask which of them were still awake. The wife told her that was Tobias, who had sat on the striped boards of the barn floor every night since the fever, knees drawn up, refusing his bed.

They went in together. The lantern found him where the wife said, small against the planks, staring at the place where his father's cart had stood. The woman knelt beside him and laid her hand flat on the wood, and something in the floor gave a long low creak like a sigh. A tear ran from under the cloth down her cheek, and it froze before it reached her chin.

'I cannot see you,' she told the boy. 'So you will have to tell me where you are.' He said he was here, and she nodded as if that was enough, and the three of them sat in the cold until the grey light came through the broken doorway. In spring the wife found that the frost had melted everywhere except on the boards where the two had knelt, and she never scrubbed those stripes clean.
