Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet stand on grey concrete, each ankle decorated with a black and grey floral tattoo. The left ankle shows a large peony bloom with shaded petals, buds and sprigs of leaves, while the right ankle has smaller flowers with fine hatched detail and foliage. Above, a partly visible tattoo includes a banner with lettering and a blue-toned design.

Mara had sketched the peonies on the back of a delivery docket before the ovens were lit, because her father always said a flower drawn in the dark would look wrong by daylight, and she wanted to see whether he was right. The bakery on Tanner Lane smelled of yeast and cold stone. Outside, the street was the colour of wet slate.

Her hands knew the work better than her head did. She scored the loaves in the blue hour, four quick slashes on each cob, the blade flicking like a pen stroke. Stan from the bins came through with the first crate of eggs and peered at the docket. "Going to bloom or wilt?" he asked. She said she didn't know yet. The peony on the paper had too many petals, and she kept shading the edges darker until the sheet looked bruised.

By five the trays were out, and a thin grey line had appeared over the rooftops. Mara carried a basket of rolls to the counter and set it beside the chalkboard, where someone had written the day's specials in capitals and then, underneath in smaller letters, a line about the weather that she had not written and did not recognise. She wiped it with her sleeve, stopped, and left the rest. Her father's handwriting had always leaned like that.

She folded the docket into her apron pocket. The first customer pushed the door open, letting in a breath of rain and wet leaves, and Mara turned to the cooling loaves with a small, private certainty that the peony would be finished by lunch.
