Floral mandala tattoos on both feet
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two bare feet with matching ornamental tattoos across the top of each foot, built from layered flower heads, leaves and teardrop shapes. The linework is fine and dense, with grey shading that gives depth to the petals and leaves. The ink is entirely black and grey against pale skin, and the toes have glitter nail polish, with the feet centred on a black textured surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dear Nell, Mr Greaves has sent the medallion back for the third time, ringing his bell at me across the floor as if I were a dog. He says the teardrops crowd the petals and the machine will drop stitches where the leaves meet. He is not wrong, but I will not have Mam's flower made plainer just because the frames are impatient.

I sat up last night with the lamp turned low and the paper pinned flat, working every flower head by hand. Each petal gets two lines of shading, one heavy at the root and one so faint you only see it when the light comes sideways across the table. Between the big heads I put the little leaves, then the teardrops hanging beneath them like drops off a gutter after rain. It was past the bell for the early shift before I got the last leaf right.
This morning I found the old pattern card Mam kept in her sewing box, the one with the pricked holes gone soft at the edges. Under the flower she had written in pencil, "Keep the drops, they hold it down." I laughed out loud and Mr Greaves looked up over his spectacles.
So I am sending the drawing to Leicester on Saturday, and you can tell Dad I have not lost my nerve. If the frames will not take the drops, then the frames will have to learn.
