Mandala tattoos on both feet
Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two symmetrical mandalas sit on the tops of a pair of bare feet, built from layered petal shapes, looped linework and fine dotted shading. The rings darken towards the outer petals and the centres fade into dense stippling. Solid black bands wrap the ankle of one leg, and the letters of LOVE and PAIN are tattooed across the toes against a grey carpet.

Oona Veldt had ground lenses for the Kessel observatory since she was eleven, and by the year the dome cracked she could tell a flaw in the glass by breathing on it. The observatory's two great mirrors had been cast in a single pour and then parted, so that each was the other's mirror turned inside out. Nobody at the station had ever seen them face each other in the dark.

The night they were finally set together, frost crept up the dome's inner skin and the lamps dimmed to amber. Oona's brother Teo held the lamp while she ran a thumb across the rim of the left mirror, feeling for the stippled rings she had pricked into the surface by hand, thousands of tiny dots that caught the light like frost on a windowpane. Her knuckles had bled on the grinding wheel for three weeks. Teo said it looked like a flower opening underwater. She told him it looked like a wound that had agreed to heal.
When the mirrors met, the looped seams lined up exactly, and the light trapped in the dome for months bent through them and spilled across the floor in two petalled rings. For one minute the station was full of colour. Then the power failed, the rings went out, and in the dark Teo read aloud the names of every engineer who had signed the work order, which was his way of saying he forgave her for the blood.
