Rose and leaves on an ankle and foot
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose with shaded petals, leaves and two buds runs from the ankle onto the top of the foot. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, creating depth in the petals and leaves. The foot rests on a wooden floor, with the tattoo as the clear focus of the composition.

Dear Nell,

The roses along the sea wall have gone to rust this week, which Mrs Penhallow says is the salt doing it, and I have stopped arguing with her about anything at all. The boarding house is quieter since the Lascelles family left in August. Only the commercial gentleman in number four remains, and he lines his boots up outside his door as though they have been rude to him.
Your letter came on Tuesday. I read it twice on the back step with my feet in the cold tin bath, which Mrs Penhallow would call a scandal. You ask whether I have made my peace with Father's garden. I have not. But I dug up the old Albertine by the coal shed on Monday, the one that never flowered properly, and found under it a root as thick as my wrist, black and wet and somehow still alive. I have it wrapped in sacking in the scullery. I intend to plant it in the yard where the sun reaches by noon, and I will not tell Mrs Penhallow until it is too late for her to object.
The thing I keep thinking about is how the bud on the old bush always opened a day late, after everyone had given up on it. Perhaps that is what we are doing, you and I, waiting for a day that is not coming. Write back soon and tell me the Hastings news. I shall keep the kettle on.
Yours in haste and in soil, Margaret
