Black and grey realism tattoo of a five-petalled blossom with leaves and a lettered banner across the lower back.

Black and grey flower with lettered banner

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded blossom with five petals and a central cluster of stamens sits above a curling ribbon banner, with leaves spreading out around it. The banner carries spaced capital lettering, and the linework is fine with soft grey shading that gives the petals and ribbon depth. The image is tightly framed in warm skin tones, with the tattoo filling most of the composition.

Dear Tomas,

The wind has gone round to the north again, and the dinghy you left on the slip has taken on two gallons of rain since Tuesday. I bailed her out this morning with the old enamel mug, the one with the chipped handle you always said I held like a teacup. Mrs Fenwick came down to watch and offered advice on the bung that I did not ask for.

Up on the cliff path the sea pinks are out, the wild ones with their stamens standing up like pins in a cushion. I pressed a bloom for you between the pages of Father's atlas, the page with the Hebrides on it, so you would have something of the island while you are stuck in that Glasgow flat. The petals went papery, but the middle held its colour the way it always does.

The ribbon the shop on the mainland sent back is not what I ordered. They lettered the name across the banner in those spaced capitals you hate, and I have decided to let it stand, because it is the name Mother painted on the bow before she was launched, and the boat is yours now, whatever the solicitor says.

Come home in June. Bring the good sail, and tell me honestly whether the bung is my fault.

Love, Ruth
