Black and grey flowers on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows several large flower blooms stacked vertically, with layered, curling petals and a central stamen cluster. The linework is soft and the petals are built up with smooth grey shading that creates strong contrast and depth. The design runs down the outer thigh against a pale skin tone, with dark fabric visible at the top left of the frame.

Mind the step there, love, the bottom one's rotted through. Sit by the wall where the sun lingers. My grandfather planted that magnolia the spring the flood took the lower field, and he swore it would never bloom on the first try. Three years it stood bare as a broom handle. Then the grey came down off the hills one April and the buds opened all at once, heavy as cabbages, petals curling back like the ruffles on a bishop's sleeve. Half the village walked up to see it, though nobody could say what it was for.

My mother said the stamens in the middle were a crowd of tiny men holding lanterns, and that if you stared long enough they'd start to climb out. I used to lie under it with a tin of barley sugar and count them. Forty-one, one year. Sixty the next. Grandfather said they were only pollen, and that the tree didn't care who counted.
The last spring he was alive, a stranger came up the lane with a sketchbook under his arm and asked if he could draw the thing. Grandfather said yes, provided he drew the second bloom that always hung low and sulked, because nobody ever wanted to look at that one. The stranger did. He got every ruffle right, and the shadow the lower petals throw on the upper ones, and he left the lanterns out of it, which I thought was a shame.
We still have the sketch. The tree came down in the winter storm of '62, but the second bloom, the sulky one, is still there on the paper, looking up at you as if it knows something.
