Three shaded roses on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three roses in different stages of bloom, with a bud near the top, connected by leaves and stems. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading and darker accents, giving them depth and volume. The design fills the upper arm and extends toward the shoulder against a plain, lightly lit background.

The steward at Carrick Hollow said the youngest rose would never open, because it had been planted in the wrong month, so the lord's three daughters climbed the broken stair each morning to see whether it had changed its mind. The first rose had come up through the cracked flags of the chapel floor, already full and heavy-headed, grey as old pewter. The second grew from the lip of the well, half open, its outer petals curled back like a lady pulling off a glove.

The third was only a bud, tight and sharp, climbing the south wall on a stem that had bent itself round three stones to reach the light. Nobody had sown it. The eldest daughter, Maud, wanted it cut for the supper table. The middle one, Ysolde, said a rose that will not bloom is still a rose and should be let alone. They argued through a whole winter, and the castle, which had been burnt twice and rebuilt once by men who forgot why, did not take sides.
In spring the bud split along one seam, and inside it was nothing but a leaf folded very small and a single thorn. Maud laughed until she had to sit on the steps. Ysolde did not laugh. She climbed the wall with a knife and a cup of water, cut the thorn free, and found a thread of the same grey wound round the stem, tied in the knot the old gardener used for grafts. Someone had been tending it in secret all along.
The bud opened the next morning while the three of them stood at the foot of the wall. It was not red. It had come up grey as the stone, every petal shaded darker at the fold, the way a thing looks when it has been left out in weather for a long time and still means to be looked at. Maud went quiet. Ysolde set her cup on the step and said the roses would have to be counted now, all three, because a garden that has been argued over is still a garden.
