Black and grey graveyard scene on an arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a large black and grey tattoo showing a graveyard with rounded headstones, a stone cross and a gothic church with pointed arches. The shading is soft and smoky, with bright highlights fading into dark shadows that suggest mist and depth. The scene fills most of the frame, with the tattoo wrapping across the skin and the background left out of focus.

Dear Ruth,

The frost came in on Tuesday and it has not left the yard since. Every morning the mist settles over the churchyard like a dog that has found the warm spot, and by ten I can only see the top of the lychgate and the stone cross leaning out of the white. Dad used to say you could count the headstones by the sound of your boots, so I tried it on Saturday. I got to eleven before I lost my nerve and went back for the milk.

The new calves are doing well. Mr Pargeter's boy has taken over the tractor now that his knee won't let him climb up, and he came round yesterday asking whether we still wanted the hay carted to the far field. I said yes, though the far field is a hard place to reach in this weather. He laughed and said nothing is hard to reach if you go slowly enough.

I went up to Dad's stone on Sunday after the service. The pointed arches of the church were black against the sky, and for a minute the mist thinned and I could see the rounded stones all the way along the wall, every one of them somebody's. I left a sprig of holly on his and it was still there this morning, which I took as a good sign, since the crows have had a go at everything else.

Come home for Christmas, even if only for two nights. I'll leave the porch light on so you can find the gate in the fog. It looks further than it is. Everything does from the road.

Love, Margaret
