Dotwork mandala tattoo in black and grey
Dotwork · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows large, symmetrical mandala designs built from stippled dots and fine lines, with radiating petal shapes and concentric rings. The shading moves from dense black at the centre of each motif to lighter grey and bare skin at the edges, giving depth. Smaller mandalas sit at the lower left and right, and the whole composition fills the frame edge to edge.

The sea took the Halvorsen boat in the autumn of the long wind, and after that Ilse Marrow sat each evening at her kitchen table with a pot of soot ink and a nib no thicker than a hair. She did not write letters. She pricked dots onto the backs of old chart paper, one after another, until the paper went grey where the lamp fell, and she said each dot was an hour the bay had kept.

The harbourmaster's boy, Tobias, came up the hill one wet afternoon to ask why she drew circles inside circles. She told him the bay was a bowl and the tide climbed its rings twice a day, and that every petal was a boat that had gone out and come back. Then she took his hand and showed him how to stipple from the centre outward, pressing hard where the heart of each flower sat and lifting off as the dots spread towards the edge, so the eye would fall inward and not wander away.
That winter a man in a grey coat came with a satchel of needles and offered two silver coins for the whole stack of drawings. Ilse turned him down without looking up. Tobias's first mandala came out black to its rim, and she unpicked it with her thumbnail, dot by dot, until the paper was grey and clean again. "Leave the edges bare," she said. "The sea does not need you to fill it."
In spring they pinned the largest drawing to the harbour wall, where the lowest tide would reach it. When the water drew back it left a ring of salt on the stones, pale and perfect around the dark centre, and the first boat of the season came in at the rim where the grey gave way to bare stone.
