Space scene with ringed planet on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic tattoo across the forearm shows a ringed planet at the top, a large swirling vortex with a bright streak of light, and scattered stars against a dark cosmic background. The shading is soft and smooth, with fine ripple-like lines in the vortex and gradual grey tones that give depth. The composition wraps around the arm, with a second planet-like sphere and a circular ripple near the lower end.

The sounder had been dead since Recife, and by the third night off the Horn the only thing I trusted was Saturn, lying low over the port bow like a brass fitting someone had forgotten to polish. Mr Okonedo held the wheel while I went out onto the wing with the sextant, my fingers numb inside two pairs of gloves, and tried to remember what my father used to say about horizons that lie.

The water had been strange all day. We had passed a patch where the swell turned in on itself, a slow funnel of grey that drew the foam round in rings, and the mate swore it was the bottom of a lost trawler sucking down. I didn't argue. Sailors' stories are mostly weather with a grudge. But the funnel was still there when the cloud tore open, and a single streak of light ran down through the gap and into the middle of it, as if someone had dropped a coin into the sea and was waiting to see if it would sink.
I took eleven sights and worked them by lamp in the chart room, the radio hissing its useless shipping forecast behind me. Every line crossed in the same place. We were eleven miles further east than the dead reckoning claimed, which meant the current had been carrying us the whole time, quietly, the way a tide carries anything it has decided to keep.
In the morning the rings had gone and the sea was only sea. I wrote the corrected position in the log, underlined it twice, and Mr Okonedo asked whether we would go round the funnel next time. I said we would steer by the planet and let the water mind its own business.
