Black and grey griffin on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A winged griffin with an eagle's head and wings and a lion's body is shown in detailed pencil-like shading. The linework is soft and the feathers and fur are rendered with fine tonal gradients. The piece is entirely in black and grey and fills most of the upper back, with the figure in a seated, forward-facing pose.

The griffin on the bow of the Patience had lost most of its colour to forty winters, so when you came aboard at Ely it looked like something carved out of wet slate. Your grandfather said that was the right way for a figurehead to age. You scraped at the eagle's head with a wire brush while the tow rope creaked behind you, and he hauled the tiller over without looking up. 'Don't go at the feathers,' he said. 'They'll come off in your hand and then where are we?'

By the third lock the scraping had shown you something underneath. Someone had drawn the beast in pencil before the paint went on, a seated griffin with its forepaw lifted, every feather hatched so finely it looked breathed on. Its lion's haunches were lightly smudged where a thumb had rubbed them. Your grandfather's brother had been dead since the spring, and the sketch had been sealed under three coats of enamel for the whole of his life on the river.
You asked whether you should cover it up again. He shrugged and said the boat had been wearing that face longer than either of them had been alive, and it could go on wearing it. So you left the drawn wings where they were, mixed a grey no paler than the pencil, and painted only the chipped patches around them.
At the top lock, with the gates groaning open and the river pouring out below, you stood at the bow with the paint tin at your feet. The griffin looked forward into the current as if it had been waiting for the water to rise and carry it on.
