Geometric fox with blue wings

Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo

A seated fox in profile is outlined in black and filled with geometric patterns, including triangles, zigzags and diamonds. Two wings in blue ink with lace-like, mandala-style patterns extend from its back. The black fill is solid across the lower body and tail, and the blue wings are lighter and more delicate, giving a balanced composition on a pale skin background.

The lace would not lie flat, and Nell had been at it since the church bells across the valley rang six. Her aunt Maud had taught her bobbin work in the cold front room above the chemist in Hebden Bridge, pins stuck into a cushion shaped like a bolster, and always said the trick was to let the pattern decide where the threads wanted to go.

The bride wanted a fox on the quilt that would cover the trestle table at the reception. Not a soft red one, but a fox made of angles, the kind Maud used to cut from black felt for cot blankets. Nell stitched it seated in profile, tail curled round its feet, a zigzag running down its flank like a row of hills seen from a train. Each night she worked the shadow in with black thread until her thumbs ached and the kettle went cold on the gas ring.

Then the bride asked for wings, and Nell had nothing to put on them but a scrap of Maud's old blue lace, kept in the biscuit tin with the buttons. She pinned it over the fox's shoulders and it fell into a round, open pattern she had never planned, all loops and diamonds, as if the thread had been waiting. Through the wall, Maud coughed in the back bedroom where she had slept since Easter, and Nell kept stitching so she would not have to go in.

At the reception nobody looked at the quilt until Maud, propped in her wheelchair by the window, held out one thin hand. She touched a wing, then the black tail. "It's not finished till someone's looking at it," she said, and the draught from the open door lifted the blue lace so the fox seemed to shift its weight, ready to fly. Nell pretended the dust had got in her eyes.
