Barn owl in flight on a shoulder blade
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A barn owl swoops diagonally across the upper back, with one wing extended to the left and the other curving up and out to the right. The feathers are rendered with fine, layered greys and deep blacks, giving a soft, realistic shading to the face and breast. A faint grey wash sits behind the bird, adding depth to the composition.

You are standing on the spoil heap before the five o'clock buzzer, hands jammed in your coat, watching the owl work the field below the winding house. It drops in silence, misses, climbs again with something small in its talons, and you only see the vole because the owl has already turned its pale face back towards you. Your father told you barn owls can hear a man's heartbeat across a meadow. He said it the way he said most things, half joking and half daring you to check.

The colliery closes in March. The lamp room is already boarded up and the canteen smells of cold tea and rumour. Men stand at the gate in the wind with their bait tins and nobody says the word redundancy, though everybody mouths it. Your mother has ironed your father's good shirt for a depot interview in Durham that he hasn't mentioned since Tuesday, and you have been told to stay off the tips, which is exactly where you go.
The owl swings wide over the headgear, wings spread like a pair of dark sheets, and you realise it has been hunting these fields for longer than anyone in the village has been out of work. It has fed on the same voles through every shift, every strike and every funeral, while the cage went down and came up with men in it. When the last haul rattles to the top, the bird folds itself and drops into the long grass without a sound. You go down the path with your hands out of your pockets, and for once you do not look back at the wheel.
