Black and grey mandala on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular mandala with a central rosette and radiating petal and diamond motifs sits across the forearm. The design is built from bold solid linework and fine stippled dotwork shading, which gives the petals and rings depth. Surrounding the mandala are looser shaded forms in grey on a dark background, and the image is in black and grey only.

The first hard frost came on the third of December, and by six the kitchen window had grown a skin of white over the glass. My father was already out at the byre, so I stood at the sink with the kettle ticking and watched the ice bloom from the corners inward, feathering into ferns, then into something rounder that I didn't recognise until I'd wiped a clear patch with my sleeve.

It was a circle, a rosette of rings within rings, each ring picked out in tiny pricks where the frost had gathered in dots. He had done this every winter since my mother left, breathing on the glass and tapping with a thumbnail until the pattern stood up. He never let me watch. He called it clearing his head, the way other men went down to the pub.
The week after the funeral I found his feed ledger in the drawer beside the range. On the back page, in pencil, were forty-one mandalas, each a little smaller than the last, petals drawn in fine stipple, the centres shaded so dark the lead had gone glossy. Under the final one he had written the date of the first snow and two words: pond holds. Nothing else.
I took the ledger down to the pond at first light. The ice was grey and thick, bruised with cloud, and the reeds around its edge were stiff with rime. I knelt and pressed my palm flat to the surface, feeling it give no more than a held breath. Then I walked out to the middle, where the rosette would have been, and stood there with my boots planted, waiting. The geese came up off the water to see what I was doing, and the ice did not crack, and I stayed until my feet were numb.
