Mandala and geometric forearm tattoo
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a forearm covered in a large circular mandala with a central eight-petal flower and layered floral and teardrop motifs. Above it, bold geometric blocks and a fine web-like lattice extend up the arm. The stippled dotwork shading gives the design depth, and the dark background keeps the focus on the skin.

The mirror ball turns above the Palais floor and throws its small coins of light across the ceiling, and you stand by the pillar with your hands in your coat pockets, counting the circles it makes. Eight petals, you think, the way Mrs Okonkwo's embroidery hoop had eight petals in the flat above the chemist's. Nobody dances the way you want to dance, all elbows and sensible shoes, so you watch the band instead, the drummer with his brushes and the trumpeter who keeps closing his eyes as if the notes are hiding behind his lids.

Then Ruth crosses the floor with two cups of orange squash and a look that means she has already decided something. She hands you one, tells you the smoke hanging under the lights is the only thing in the room worth studying, and asks what you intend to do about the Thursday raffle. You tell her the truth: you have never once won anything, and the prize is a Fair Isle jumper that will fit neither of you.
Near midnight the band slows for a waltz and the floor fills with pairs, couples drifting in loose rings around one bright centre. You stay where you are, cup going warm in your hand. Ruth sets hers down on the windowsill and holds out her palm, open and patient, the way you'd offer back something a person had dropped without noticing.
You take it. The lights keep turning across the ceiling, and for once you let them carry you.
