Black and grey mandala on an upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A person in a black crop top and mauve skirt shows a black and grey mandala tattoo on the upper arm, with the face cropped out of frame. The mandala uses fine radiating linework and dense dotted shading, and a smaller ornamental design sits lower on the forearm near the wrist. The close, slightly grainy shot has a dark background and a soft, natural light.

Sit where the light falls, Marta said, and keep your hands in your lap, because the pattern is still breathing. Her grandmother had taught her that a round of lace must be worked from the centre outward, every spoke counted against the pricking card, or the sea would find the gap and come in through it. On Skerry nobody hurried a circle. Women sat in their doorways through the grey months with the pillow on their knees, and the bobbins clacked like a slow rain.

Tomas had gone out after the last of the cod in October, and the weather had turned behind him. Marta pricked the card by the stove every night, one small hole for each day he had not come back. The holes gathered into dots, the dots thickened into shadow around the rings, and by Candlemas the pattern had outgrown the table. She worked the outer ring first, which was wrong, and Ilse next door said so, and Marta kept working it anyway.
On the last morning she reached the centre and found she could not close it. Every spoke wanted a stitch she did not have the heart to make. So she left a single hole unpricked, the way a thing is left when someone is still expected, and she sewed the final ring around it. The wind leaned on the cottage all afternoon, and the threads held.
She pinned the lace to the window facing the water, where the dark came in first. That night a boat came round the point with its lamp turned low. The men aboard said afterwards that they had counted the rings in the glass and steered for the open hole in the middle, the way you steer for a door left on the latch.
