Black mandala tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person in a white camisole and ripped white jeans sits with one arm resting down, showing a black mandala-style tattoo on the upper forearm near the elbow. The design has a radial pattern of lace-like petals and fine detailing, built from solid dark ink with some shading. The photo is cropped below the neck and above the knees, with soft natural light and a plain grey seat behind.

The mortar crumbles under your thumbnail before the chisel even touches it, and Ferris, the old mason on the other end of the rope, laughs at the look on your face. Up here, forty feet above the flagstones of Carrow Keep, the great rose window has lost half its tracery. What remains is a radial web of stone petals, each cut so thin that daylight shows through.

You spend the first week drawing it. Ferris insists on charcoal rather than paper, because paper, he says, lies about the curve. You trace each petal from the outside inwards, counting the lobes, marking where the circles overlap like rings a stone leaves on still water. By the third day your hands are black to the wrist, and the bell from the village church has stopped being a distraction.
On the last morning the wind drops and the sun comes straight through the glass that is left. Shadows of the missing stonework fall across the nave in the pattern you have been trying to fix on paper all week. Ferris climbs up beside you, looks for a long time, and says nothing. Then he takes the charcoal from your fingers and draws a single dot at the centre, where every petal meets.
'That's the bit they'll never see,' he says. 'Get it right anyway.'
