Black and grey mandala sleeve on both arms
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Both arms are covered with ornate mandala and floral designs, with a dense field of small star-like dots and fine dotted lines in the upper section of the left arm. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, built up in greys across lotus-like rosettes and layered petals. The image is cropped to the torso and arms, with a white tank top and a silver chain necklace as the background.

Old Tamsin Rowe kept a slate by the pit-head lamp room, and on it she chalked the sky each night before the cage went down. She did not draw the moon. She drew the small hard stars that showed through the shaft gap at the top of the winter dark, one dot for each, then joined them with fine lines the way her mother had shown her, so that a man lost at the bottom of the workings could find his way home by the pattern alone.

The night the Hollin seam flooded, the whole village came to the lamp room with their lamps guttering. The men were still under. Nobody could agree which way the water had gone. Tamsin took the chalk from her apron and drew a rosette the size of a cartwheel across the stone floor, petal over petal, circle inside circle, and when she had finished she set the lamps down on its points, one at each petal tip, so that every light stood where a star would be.
The lamps burned low and the lines held. Down in the dark the men saw a glow in the shape of a flower, and they followed the petals up the gallery one by one, the way sailors follow stars, until the water fell away behind them and their boots found the iron rungs.
Tamsin wiped the chalk from her hands, which were grey to the wrist, and went back to her own bed. In the morning the floor was swept clean, but the petal lines were still there under the dust, faint as ever, and nobody in the village has walked across that floor since without stepping round them.
