Three black roses with leaves on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm shows a cluster of three large roses in bold black ink, with several pointed leaves extending down towards the wrist. The roses use solid black areas with grey shading to create depth, and the outlines are heavy and clear. The plain grid-patterned bedsheet behind the arm keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The gardener's daughter kept three black roses alive through the winter the siege took Harrowgate Keep. She grew them in a cracked trough inside the chapel, where the roof had fallen in and the ravens had the belfry. Nobody else went up there. She climbed the broken stair by a rope knotted every arm's length and carried water in a clay pitcher, pouring slowly so the thin soil would not wash away.

In March the steward came up looking for her. The lord's new bride would not be wed without a black rose in her hair, and he had been told the only ones left in the county grew in that chapel. Agnes said the roses flowered only for those who carried the water. He laughed, drew his knife, and cut the largest stem at the crown. It bled a thin sap onto the flagstones. He went back down the stair with the flower clamped in his teeth, and by evening a thorn in his thumb had swollen it to the size of a plum.
Agnes did not go down to see him. She pressed the cut stem into the wet earth beside the other two and sang the words her mother used for bees. Three nights later the lord's men came up the stair and found the chapel walls green from floor to sill. Leaves had climbed every arch and window, and the roses had opened in the dark, heavy and black as ink.
In the morning the men found only the gardener's daughter sitting on the rope, peeling a pear. Beside her the three roses had turned their faces to the sun, and the stem the steward had cut was already putting out a new bud.
