Crystals and peonies on an arm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A bent arm shows a large tattoo of geometric crystal clusters drawn in clean black outlines, with peony and poppy-like flowers at the top and bottom of the design. The flowers are shaded with stippled dots and fine hatching, while the crystals are mostly open outlines with light grey fill. The design is set against a plain white wall, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Mind your boots on the path, because the ground under the peony bed is hollow where the old quarrymen left it. My great-grandmother's grandmother planted those flowers over the spoil heap, and she always said the roots would never take unless something underneath had something to hold onto.

Every spring the gardener, a widow called Hester Quayle, went down the cellar steps with a candle and a bent knife to scrape the damp walls. She found quartz points pushing out of the rock like frost that had decided to stay. She learned to cut them free without breaking their tips, and she set them in rows along the shelf, each one facing the way the sun travelled.

The poppies came up wild along the wall and sheltered a fox that visited nightly, and the peonies grew fat as cabbages. But the year the rain stopped, the crystals began to hum whenever the wind moved the cellar door, a low note like a wet finger round the rim of a glass. Hester's son came home from the mill to sell the house, and he laughed at her ledger of points and their colours.

He carried one crystal up to the garden to prove it was only stone and set it on the bed in full sun. By evening the petals had opened in a ring around it, heavy and dark as wine, and the stone was warm in his palm. He never sold the house. Hester's ledger still lists every point, and beside the last entry, in his careful hand, is a single word: stay.
