Black and grey portrait chest piece

Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A large chest tattoo of two realistic portraits, a woman on the left and a young man in the centre, set against a steamship and other maritime details. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys and deep blacks building the faces and background. The composition fills the upper torso, with a framed oval scene on the right and tattooed arms at the edges of the frame.

The third-class queue at the Landing Stage had been moving for two hours when the sketcher pushed his way to my desk. He had a board under one arm and charcoal smeared on his cuff, and he wanted me to stamp a paper naming him Tobias Renner, draughtsman, bound for Halifax. I told him the stamp was not for sale. He turned the board around and showed me the drawing beneath: a woman with her hair pinned flat, looking past my shoulder as if the sea were standing behind me.

She was his sister, he said, and she had stayed in Lewes when their mother died. He had drawn her from memory on the crossing, then drawn the young stoker who had lent him a candle in the steerage dark. Behind the two of them he had sketched the funnels and a thin ribbon of coal smoke that the wind kept pulling flat. I asked why a man would carry faces across an ocean instead of coin. He said coin is spent, and faces stay where you put them.

I stamped the paper. I told myself it was the candle that decided me, though I think it was the way he held the board, as if a gust might tip his whole life over the rail. He went up the gangway with his sister's face under his arm, and I never learned whether she reached Nova Scotia. Years later, when I was a customs man at Harwich, a brown envelope came across my desk with a Canadian postmark. Inside was a pencil sketch of a woman at a ship's rail, her hair loose, and on the back, in careful capitals, he had written: STAMPED, AND KEPT.
