Black and grey portrait of a woman with a telephone

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a woman with an upswept updo, dark eye makeup and tear tracks running down her face. She holds a vintage telephone receiver to her ear beside a string of dark beads and a ringed hand. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys and deep blacks, and the figure fills the frame against a pale background.

The telephone in the Mayfair flat had not rung since Tuesday, and by Friday Lena had stopped pretending to read. She sat on the edge of the chaise with the receiver lifted to her ear, listening to the hum of the line the way other women listened to the wireless, hoping for a voice she recognised. Her mother's jet rosary lay looped over the arm of the chair, and every so often she wound a bead between her fingers until it hurt.

Mrs Pell at the exchange had once told her that calls never really went missing. People simply stopped picking up, and the wire kept humming regardless. Lena had thought it a cruel thing to say to a woman in her position, but it had stayed with her, the way the cocktail ring from Vienna stayed on her hand when she washed up, though it was worth more than the lease and she had sworn to sell it. She cried in the bath now, where the running water covered the sound.

On Friday evening the telephone finally rang. She let it go seven times, counting the rings against her fingertips, then answered in the voice she had practised all week. Nobody spoke. There was only a faint crackle, a room somewhere with a clock ticking, and then the click of someone setting down a receiver with great care.

She sat with her own receiver against her cheek until the dialling tone came back, flat and patient. Then she turned the dial herself, one digit at a time, and listened to the number ring in the empty house in Hampstead where he had promised to wait. Across the city a telephone trilled on a hall table, and she counted every ring until it stopped.
