The umbrella comes in on a wet Tuesday, black, one rib bent, with a bus ticket wedged in the handle. You log it at the lost property hatch at Hollin Bridge the way you log everything: item, platform, date, a note of what it looks like. Then you tip it over the tray and a folded sheet of sketchbook paper slides out from inside the canopy.

It is a pencil portrait that someone has since gone over in ink with a fine nib. A man with a heavy fringe falls across his forehead, a beard worked in tiny stippled dots, his jaw set as if he has been asked a question he does not care to answer. Beneath it, in careful block capitals, someone has written ONLY MRS PRIDDY CAN JUDGE ME. You know Mrs Priddy. She runs the buffet car on the 7.14 and has never once been wrong about a cup of tea.

The owner comes back on Thursday, rain still dripping off his collar, and asks for the umbrella and nothing else. You hand it over and he glances at the folded sheet poking from your tray and laughs. She'd have clipped me round the ear for that likeness, he says. You ask who she is. He says she is the woman who taught him to tell a good drawing from a flattering one, and that she still sends his sketches back with red ticks in the margins.

He pockets the page without asking whether it is yours to give, and you find you do not mind. When he has gone you open the ledger, find the entry, and write CLAIMED beside it. Then, because the tea on the 7.14 is still weak and the platform clock is running slow, you put the kettle on and wait for the next thing nobody has come back for.
