Realistic bowed head portrait on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey tattoo shows a man with his head bowed and one hand raised near his head, with the lower body and arm of a second figure visible on the left. The shading is soft and detailed, with smooth gradients on the hair, face and clothing and darker tones in the shadows. The tattoo fills the centre of a bare upper back, with the skin tone of the wearer forming a light background.

In the kingdom of Hollowmere, where the river froze every third winter, a boy called Tobin Ashby waited at the ferry steps until the lamps were lit across the water. His mother had crossed to the salt town that morning with a sack of eels and a promise to be back before the bell. The bell rang twice. Then it rang no more.

Mags Quill, who kept the ferry, did not send him home. She gave him a bench under the awning and a cup of barley broth that tasted of tar. 'The river keeps what it's given,' she said, 'and gives back only what it owes.' Tobin thought this was the kind of thing old women say to make a long night shorter, and he told her so. She laughed and poled the empty raft out into the dark anyway.
Nine days later the thaw broke. Tobin saw his mother first as a shape on the far bank, thin and grey, walking the way someone walks after a fever. He did not wait for the raft. He went into the shallows to his knees, then to his waist, and when the ice knocked against his shins he kept going. She caught him at the water's edge. He pressed his face into her shoulder and held her wrist up between them, as if it might slip away again, and he could not say anything at all.
Mags watched from the steps and said nothing about owing. She hung the lantern on the post and let it burn until morning. Tobin never learned what the salt town had cost, and he stopped asking the river for anything after that.
