Portrait of a man in smiley sunglasses on a thigh
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a head-and-shoulders portrait of a man wearing a grey cap and round sunglasses with yellow smiley faces on the lenses. He has a cigarette between his lips, stubble and long hair framing the face. Bold dark outlines, soft orange skin tones, and touches of red and teal sit against the grey of the cap and the lenses.

I am writing because you asked me to keep the back bedroom aired for Mr Hollis, and I have, though I doubt he will thank either of us. He came off Tuesday's bus with one canvas holdall, a grey cap pulled low and a pair of round tinted glasses with a yellow smiley painted on each lens, as if someone had dared him to look cheerful. He signed the register as Cal Rooney and paid the week in coins from a tobacco tin.
He spends his evenings on the sea wall with an unlit cigarette tucked behind one ear, turning it over like a coin he cannot spend. The gulls on the harbour steps know him by now. On Wednesday I took up a pot of tea and found him at the window counting the lighthouse flashes under his breath, and when I asked what he was waiting for he said a boat that was not coming in. Then he laughed, which I did not expect.
This morning his bed was made tight as a drum and his holdall was gone. On the breakfast table beside the marmalade he had left his glasses, one lens cracked clean across the left smile. There was no note. I have put them on the sill of his room facing the water, the way he sat when he thought nobody was watching, and I have told the girl not to dust them.
I will keep the room aired until Friday, as you asked, though I have stopped expecting the bus. Yours in haste, Maureen Tarrant.
