Black and grey rose and skull arm sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full arm sleeve of black and grey tattooing shows two shaded roses, one above the elbow and one on the forearm, with a skull partly blended into the upper rose. A bird and trailing leaves run between them down the arm. The shading is smooth and tonal, with soft grey gradients on the petals and strong darks in the leaves, and the wearer is shown from the chest down against a plain black top and denim shorts.

Nights on Ward 14 at the Calder Royal start the same way, with the trolley wheels squeaking and the fridge humming in the sluice. Mr Holroyd in bed six never sleeps before three, so I take him his tea and the biscuits nobody else will eat. Tonight he asked for a biro and the back of his drug chart.

He drew with the careful slowness of a man who had done it for a living before the shipyard closed and his hands went. A rose first, its petals darkening at the rim where the pen pressed hardest, then a skull he tucked into the heart of the bloom so you only saw it if you looked twice. "My dad did this sort of thing on sailors," he said. "Grey, never colour. Colour fades, grey holds." Next came a wren coming down the page through a tangle of leaves, then two more roses where the arm would bend.
I asked whose arm it was meant for. He tapped the drawing with the biro cap. "My granddaughter's. She's nineteen, she's got a sleeve in her head and no money, so I said I'd draw it while I can still hold a line."
At half four the sister wanted the chart back for the morning round, so I pinned it above the sluice sink to save it from the bin. By seven the wren was still halfway down the leaves, and nobody had the heart to take it down.
